This weekend on my '81 trail 110 I put on new exhaust from DrAtv, along with an exhaust donut(http://www.dratv.com/exdonko8.html).
I am assuming (I could be wrong) that this donut goes between the loose exhaust plate and the engine exhaust port, acting as an external gasket between the exhaust pipe flange and exhaust port on engine head. This is how I have it set up.

However, I've read several things about these exhaust donuts being INSIDE the engine exhaust port, making me think maybe I bought the wrong size donut? Although DrAtv has never steered me wrong, and Trail110 is listed as one of the bikes that this donut fits (see above link).
I wish I had a point of reference, but there was no visible donut present on old muffler, making me suspect that maybe the donut in fact does go inside the port, instead of acting like an exterior washer, because the donut I have is too wide to fit in the port.
When I start the bike, there is some pretty serious smoke coming from the site where the exhaust meets the engine, and it is definitely not exhaust fumes/smoke. It smells like the donut is burning. i know I have a tight seal on the exhaust port though, there is no leaking gas/exhaust fumes coming from the connection point, just this mystery smoke.
Can someone confirm with me WHERE this donut goes- inside the port, or around the outer edge like a washer? Maybe I have the wrong size! Has anyone had similar smoke issues when installing a new exhaust system?
Thanks dudes
