Correction---the case of the missing gas receipt.
I had posted that I was getting 168 mpg. I was wrong. There was the matter of a missing gas ticket which doubled my calculated mpg. Well the missing ticket showed up and now I will
be washing the egg from my face. Sorry about the inaccurate post. Except for the mileage error everything else in the post is correct.
My 83' came to me with aprox 600 miles on it a little over a year ago. I changed the oil at 1800 miles to Amsoil Motorcycle Oil, it is now at 4000 miles and the oil still looks new and not even a hint of clutch slipping.I have been working to get the most mpg I can and really good oil is one of the many factors to consider when optimizing the fuel economy.
I started out getting aprox 80mpg .
My best mpg so far is 105.
A few of my mods are: hacking and grinding on exhaust baffle (to reduce back pressure and to allow me to apply a functional spark arrestor for use in the mountains), installed Iridium spark plug, created an extension for the idle speed screw, this allows me to adjust the idle for choke and non-choke operation, on the fly.
I adjusted the idle mixture so that the bike will not cold start without the choke then riched it up a bit to counter a bit of surge that occurred just off of idle. I run the timing advanced a bit beyond factory spec.
The valves are adjusted a tiny bit loose to retard the valve timing ever so slightly.
I put Michelin Gazelles, a proper street tire, and wow the cornering got way better and reduced rolling resistance. I keep the chain loaded with Chain Wax.
Whenever possible I use Chevron (85 octane in the mountains and 87 octane at home and any where below 7000 ft altitude.
I also use RXP fuel additive but not every tank, it is supposed to decarbon the valves and combustion chamber, and it seems to work (I will be able to report more on this when I borrow a borescope from a mechanic friend).
I weigh about 200 and never go over 45 mph.
I will continue to monitor and report the results, and correcting errors.
All in all 105 ain't too shabby.....................
If any of you have been working on the mpg issue please post your efforts and results.
