If you have a test light, you can use it to check if the points open and close.

Open the fuse holder. Connect the test light clip to the fuse metal furthest from the battery.

Check the test light by touching the sharp tip to an engine bolt. If good it will light up. Proceed to test points.

Unplug points wire between the cylinder head and frame. Touch the sharp probe tip to the points wire connector (male terminal).

Put transmission in neutral. Kick the engine over. Good points will flash the test light OFF and ON.

An Ohm meter (resistance tester) can be used as well, probe an engine bolt and the disconnected male points terminal.

Kickover measures Infinity (not connection, points open) to low resistance (points closed).

Considering its old, maybe install new points and service the spark advancer while you are in there.
