Selenium used in rectifiers was compounded with other ingredients. In my time I have seen red, orange, blue, and green Selenium rectifiers.

Lacking any sort of tools to prove its a coat of paint or a layer of compounded Selenium, I err on the side of caution as the British do, and consider the whole assembly a piece of toxic waste.
