Took the time to siphon all the gas from the '76 (and my CT70 K3), drained the carb bowls, and pulled both batteries.  Probably won't get time to ride anymore this fall...kind of hard with young kids to have free time at the moment.

I was shocked to find that the unfused wire from the '76's battery had apparently gotten a bit hot as the plastic over the connection was all blackened.  Yes, I did have the wires from the battery connected correctly (fused wire to red/black and unfused to red/white).  Either I have a bad battery (which wouldn't be a surprise - it is 3 years old), or I have something more going on.  I'll be digging in further to see if the rectifier got fried - it was the original silicon one.
