Yeah, you may want to just slightly loosen the main triple tree nut. Don't loosen it too far without something to possibly catch the ballbearings, in case the grease doesn't hold them in there. I'm thinking just a half turn or so, then you can see if the top and bottom of the triple tree will rotate independently of each other and you'll be able to put them back into alignment. Might have to slightly loosen up the top fork bolt and slighten loosen up the bottom fork pinch bolt, to get things to move, but still under a little tension.

Or, as long as you're only able to "bench race" for awhile, why not take the triple tree apart and grease everything up. You won't have to do that job again for another 40+ years. Have you done a front fork seal replacement yet? How are your front wheel bearings? Need front brake shoes? New front tire? Now's the time, and then you're done.
