like ct said, need to scuff up those plates, and be sure they have some thickness left, I think the min is .092, new is .112, and realisticly if they are under like .100 they are basicly done. do that test by turning the clutch one way, and then the other before install, shows if its assembled right. search for that test.

dont sweat the "goo", just clean what you can, clean the screen, and do a few hot oil changes.

used plates dont need to be soaked

I wipe the basket and strap with iso alc before installing the strap, then I zip tir the handle to the singarm (thats if I dont have my air impact gun)
