I did finally get time to pull the Keihin apart and it was clean as a whistle.  Jets clean, bowls clean etc.  But fuel filters are new and tank is clean and fuel is not old so have no idea what the problem is or was...  I reinstalled the PZ19 on this bike and now it works fine.  There must be some inherent problem with the stock carburetor as it has been redone 4 times since 2007 and each time it works for a while then craps out...  But at least my CT is roadworthy again; will try and put a few miles on it today!
