Josh, if you can get some plexiglass, make a cover for the stator, here's what I did, then I used my riding mower to power the timing light (any 12v battery will do if you don't have a rider.)
FYI, I made two one with a hole in the cover to see the timing mark, and one without... I prefer the one without the hole as it's less messy...
