Okay, here's what I found. Being my test engine has a sub transmission I removed the gears to get the left side cover off. Once off you can see the breather hole, with my screwdriver in it. If you look at the gasket on the case cover you'll see a slit in the gasket that lines up with the hole in the case and another slit in the gasket that opens to the cast tunnel area on the case that exits in front of the gear. I rear where having the wrong gasket on the case will prevent the breather from working correctly.
