The bigger journey:

Bill Lear was famous worldwide for several things, mainly his Lear Jets. There's something called the 'Lear Principle' which I decided to follow as a young man, but it's certainly not for everyone. This says to find your employment, and work hard at it until you've learned absolutely everything there is to be known about it, while giving your all to do your very best and faithfully contribute all that you have in return. Once that is accomplished, having learned all and given all, look for the next position and do the same. The old job must give you an excellent reference, and over time you accumulate a most impressive resume desirable to most any employer. Life could not be more interesting, because you know inside that you aren't stuck there for the duration but are instead free, and employer & co-workers highly value your daily contributions of your very best.

Within that I discovered some various types of work I could do well that paid fairly well, and allowed extensive travel to boot, so I became a road dog. I kept my vintage Dodge truck in tip-top shape & pulled a good sized travel trailer behind, with my whole life stored inside the two. An industrial shutdown for re-tooling or rewiring or extensive mods could last several weeks over very long days, up to 14-16 hours a day 7 days a week for many weeks straight. Fat paycheck, and then all the time off I wanted to recuperate until the next job.

Traveled the country for years, a free bird owned by no one. My home was in my heart and my beliefs, and in my country America that I love, all mine and spread out before me at sunrise every day. Some would say 'irresponsible drifter' or 'vagrant' until I trot out my resume that would make their head spin, or drop names that would make them sit down hard. "Well Officer, no I'm not a local resident, but you might want to have your Watch Commander call -x-x-x- who will vouch for me, before this gets uncomfortable for either of us..." As I used to say, 'Carry your bonafides' to prove who you are & what you're doing & there's never a question. Sometimes I'd honestly answer queries, "I'm vacationing..." and it was true, except it was my life: one giant vacation occasionally interrupted by intensely interesting & rewarding work.

I never asked for a 12 room house on the hill with a fat mortgage I couldn't afford. 90% of the time my 'Rent' was free or stupid cheap. I found that after customizing, the trailers provided for every conceivable need in life & all comforts without useless extravagance or waste, a small footprint if you will. Wherever I was it was 'Home' and if it wasn't good I could leave any time, or if good I could stay. My Zip Code was U.S.A. and every single day was an integral part of the continual excitement & thrills of adventure in vast reaches of unknowns of people & places, waiting to be discovered.

I sit now in my trailer, quite comfortable, on the side of a high desert mountain overlooking a breathtaking valley stretched out below. Surrounded by raw nature, wildlife and plentious beauty, the same faithful 44 year old truck sits parked, patiently waiting at the ready if the adventure continues. Main difference now is that I slowly work on a CT90 that will ride in a rack on the rear, to add a whole new dimension and open up vast new vistas of discoveries. The truck's odometer has well over a million miles on it now, and so does mine, but we both still start in the mornings so the future looks good. It's all a matter of the heart, you see, and for some that heart beats strong to freedom and adventure, the rest is just a matter of following along after.

In a very real sense, most people's true limitations are only those which they've imposed on themselves. You cannot, unless you dare do. The real quality of your doings in life is according to that which you truly believe & actively live. As for me and my house, I will daily follow after and serve that which I believe and see where it takes me: and I will be free. It is sufficient, and it is still exciting after so very many years.
