That would be my guess as well.  Also check for voltage at the socket and then  work your way back.  Grounds can be a problem when a bike gets this old.  If it isn't a burnt out bulb you can check the ground by making your own ground wire by using any old piece of wire and grounding it to the frame.  Warning, I'm not good with electrical but even a blind squirrel gets a nut once in a while.
